ASMI Cleveland Chapter Award & Honor Recipients

Recap of Cleveland Chapter Awards for 2005-2006

Last September 2005, at the ASMI Conference in Pittsburgh, four people supported by Cleveland Chapter were recognized as Fellows.

Mr. J. Richard Douglas of JRD Associates and a co-founderof Metalworking Consultant Group, LLC,  was recognized as follows: "For advancing metallurgical knowledge within the field and for educating and training graduate engineers and technicians."  What this does not say is that Dick is an expert in metalworking, in particular forging.   He has been a consultant to the general metalworking industry for several years.  Prior to starting his private business, he worked for many years at Eaton’s Technology Center in Willoughby Hills.  One of his noted achievements was hot forging of net shaped gears.

Dr. Sai V. Raj, a Materials Research Engineer at NASA Glenn Research Center, was recognized "For seminal contributions to the understanding of the creep behavior of materials and the development, processing and characterization of intermetallic alloys."

Mr. Alvin M. Sabroff, co-founder and President of Metalworking Consultant Group, LLC, was recognized "For outstanding research and development in metalworking of titanium metals and its alloys, and hydrostatic extrusion of various metals."  Al is well known to the metalworking community from his many years of research and development at Battelle Memorial Institute, later at Eaton Corporation, and more recently at MCG.  He is a strong advocate for maintaining a strong manufacturing technology base in Northeast Ohio.

Dr. R. Devesh K. Misra, the Stuller Endowed Professor of Metallurgy in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, in Lafayette, Louisiana, was recopgnized "For notable contributions to the knowledge, understanding and application of high-strength steels, copper alloys and aluminum alloys; the influence of grain boundary segregation; and the development of the ultra-high-strength hot rolled microalloyed steels."  Formerly a researcher at the LTV Technology Center in Independence, Devesh was an active member of our chapter in addition to being a well known steel metallurgist performing research on microalloyed steels.

The award winners for the Cleveland Chapter Awards for this 2005-2006 year are:

2006 ASMI Cleveland Chapter Award of Distinction:  Dr. WilliamScott, recently retired from ASMI.  Bill essentially had two careers.  First, he was a well known researcher in the world of steels, working at Lukens Steel Co.  However he is better known to many in Cleveland Chapter because of his dedicated work within ASMI.  He has been editor of Advanced Materials & Processes, the flagship publication of ASMI, he has been a technology leader on many ASMI committees, and just prior to his retirement he was the Acting Director of ASMI.
