The new entrance to the Sheraton is the first traffic light west of I-77 just after the BP Station. You will make a left at the light and then take an immediate left to enter the drive that leads up to the Hotel Conference Center. Enter the main lobby and look for meeting location room on the Hotel locator board.

Brush Wellman and the James Webb Space Telescope

Mr. Hattan, Project Manager for the JWST program at Brush Wellman Inc., will cover the fundamentals of the James Webb Space Telescope and will explain how beryllium was made to meet the telescope needs. The presentation will include an animation by NASA on how the telescope will open as it leaves earth and reaches orbit. Brush Wellman has working on the program under the name JWST since 2003 but actually started making experimental material for the telescope in the 1990’s. Just as the Hubble Telescope has become a national treasure, the JWST is destined to do the same. Hearing about the construction of parts for this telescope in Ohio by a Cleveland based company should be interesting to the audience.

7:30 Presentation: Lawrence Hattan – Project Manager for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) Program – Brush Wellman Inc.

Lawrence Hattan

Mr. Lawrence Hattan is a Metallurgical Engineer. He currently acts as Project Manager for some of Brush Wellman’s largest orders for beryllium metal. Mr. Hattan’s three most recent projects involved beryllium for the JET fusion reactor in England, beryllium for the guidance system of Trident Missile program, and beryllium for the mirrors on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). His life was spent as a production manager for copper base alloy manufacturers. Ten years ago, Larry Hattan managed the construction of a $117 million expansion project in Elmore, Ohio. That plant expansion included melting furnaces, hot and cold rolling mills, annealing and heat treating furnaces, pickling and slitting lines. It more than doubled the company's capacity for beryllium copper strip products. Mr. Hattan is an active stamp collector. His home is in Port Clinton, Ohio.
