QUALITY ENGINEER- METALLURGICAL

POSITION OPENING: Metallurgical Specialist
COMPANY LOCATION: Niles, Ohio, 2 openings
A. Position Summary
RTI International Metals, Inc. is seeking two individuals to serve as Metallurgical Engineering Specialists. One will specialize in a titanium extrusion concentration and the other will serve in a hot forming/superplastic forming concentration. Both positions are being developed to assist the Technical Business Development Director to increase technical strengths of the fabrication and distribution business units and to develop new business opportunities as well.
B. Job Duties / Responsibilities
- These positions will interact directly with customers, hear their requirements and establish with each business unit the best possible way to respond to their needs. These needs can be addressing current products/manufacturing process or new product/process development concerns.
- These positions will research technical trends regarding titanium products and applications as well as manufacturing technology in key industries we serve such as aerospace, defense and energy.
- These positions will also identify technical strengths and weaknesses of products as well as manufacturing process and develop, execute and manage improvement plans in conjunction with each business unit.
C. Basic Qualifications / Requirements
- BS in Metallurgical Engineering or equivalent (MS preferable).
- Strong knowledge base and skills in titanium metallurgy.
- Experience in program planning/development, proposal writing, program management and report preparation.
- Experience in industrial or R&D in three or more of the following fields:
- Extrusion
- Hot forming/Superplastic forming
- Material testing including fatigue and fracture mechanics properties
- Microstructure/property control
- Welding
- Machining
- FEA Analysis
- Quality design and management
- Kaizen, 5S, Six Sigma
- Ability to travel 30 to 40 percent necessary.
- Good computer skills MS Office necessary.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Bilingual English/French, a plus.
- US citizen or US permanent resident status required.

Work within a steelmaking EAF melt shop to continually improve quality of products and services. Research and develop of practices and processes.
• Develop and utilize computer programs for quality tracking purposes.
• Collect and communicate product quality data – Root Cause Analysis of process related defects and effects on final products.
• Recommend and implement process improvements.
• Conduct customer tours. • Visit customers with Technical Services to trouble-shoot and resolve customer complaints. • Fill in for Chief Metallurgist in their absence.
• Populate and maintain data bases for assessment of product capability analysis. Qualifications: BS in Metallurgical Engineering or related field and 3-5 years of experience. There is a strong preference is for Steel related experience. Experience with ISO/QS9000, TS 16949 and Six Sigma Continuous Improvement techniques will be a plus. NSL Analytical Services Inc., an independent commercial testing laboratory, has been providing quality services in elemental chemistry, metallurgical and polymer analysis for a variety of industries such as Aerospace, Fuel Cells, Ceramics, Nano-materials, Composites and Manufacturing since 1945. We are
currently looking for an experienced Metallurgist for our laboratory.
Chief Metallurgist
This position is primarily responsible for the management of all metallurgical lab operations to include efficient operation of the lab, direct labor performed on samples, quality improvement, methods employed, quality of results, training of personnel, production flow, as well as technical assistance when necessary.
Other Functions:
Work closely with customers to cultivate relationships, help solve their problems and build the business.
Prepare samples and perform metallurgical evaluations in accordance with customer requirements such as, but not limited to, hardness testing, microstructure evaluations and tensile testing.
Conduct analysis of failed components to determine root cause of failure and write technical reports outlining the results of the evaluation.
Responsible for the budget and implementation of the Strategic Plan.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience):
- BS degree in Materials Science or a related technical field or equivalent work experience.
- 5 + years of laboratory experience and/or be able to exhibit the skills and knowledge of a candidate with 7 years experience.
- 2 - 3 + years of management experience. Management in a lab setting preferred.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong mathematical skills
- Must be familiar with all metallurgical lab equipment and testing procedures
- Strong customer focus
